Custom-built website

Want more control over your family history website? Build it from scratch. Here's what you need to get started:

Website building software

Here are my recommendations:

Shop around for discount suppliers. You won't get the support from the manufacturer, but the price will be considerable less.

Graphic design capabilities

The same programs you use to edit your photos can be used to create

the graphic elements of your website (banner, text, images)

Web domain

URL—name of your website, usually starts with www. You must do a

domain search to make sure the name you have chosen is not already

taken, then register your domain. Many web hosts include this as part

    of the web hosting service.

Web host

Server where your website pages reside so anyone can access them at any time via the world wide web. My recommendations—all of these have free domain search and registry and unlimited disk space and bandwidth.

Discussion Features

Online assistance or software that makes it possible for others to post comments (blog or forum) on your website

Blog—controlled by you or a small group of people who make regular

entries, similar to a diary. Others can post comments, but do not initiate

a subject. To set up a blog, you need a blog host:

ForumOpen discussion that relies on the public to initiate a subject.
