About the Coach
Hi. My name is Sharon Kovach
and I’m the coach. I’m so glad you stumbled upon my family history tutorial website.
Why I built this website
In the early 1990’s my husband brought home our
first personal computer. It was a used MAC with little RAM and not much more
hard drive space. It did, however, have Photoshop 3 on it.
The problem was, the
only affordable way you could move files onto or off the computer was with a
floppy disk, and a floppy wouldn’t even hold one good quality photo.
Today most low-end computers come with enough
hard drive space and RAM to make a movie and burn inexpensive CDs that hold
dozens of photographs.
My passion is digging up history. . . literally,
as I was pursuing a career as an archaeologist. People that inhabited the sites
where I worked didn't have the benefit of electronic media that we enjoy today,
but there is plenty of evidence that at least some were interested in family
history.
I loved the stories my father told about the
early days of the automobile and radio. . . things I could only experience in my
imagination. I wish I had made a tape recording of him telling his family
stories. I am now taking the steps to ensure my children don’t have that same
regret.
When I became the caretaker of my parent’s
family photos I wanted to attach my father’s stories to them and keep them safe
for my children and grandchildren. I took all of the photos out of the older
photo albums that had a tendency to digest photos, made digital copies, put
them in a box, and that was the end of it.
I’m now trying to figure out how I want to
share my family photos and stories. I long ago shifted from archaeology to
multimedia, so I have the resources and skills to assemble my family history
project. Share the journey with me and put your own family history project
together.
My family history coaching qualifications
I now have a multimedia company, and I’ve made a
number of documentaries, biographies, instructional, and event videos, and have
Videotaped dozens of interviews. One of the services my company provides is a college
recruiting portfolio on interactive CD-ROM with skills video.
We use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator for photo
editing and graphic design, edit video with Apple’s Final Cut Pro, author CDs
in Adobe Director, and design websites in Adobe Dreamweaver. These are all
expensive, professional programs, but there are many fine inexpensive (some
free) programs available. In these pages you will find ways to get a
professional result with the bargain programs. I test many of the programs I
recommend—particularly the free ones.
